Adventures with Film

I’ve recently gotten back into film photography. Mostly for something fun to do, but also because I have felt this need to tap back into what made me love photography in the first place. It’s too easy to get caught up in running a business and the social media hustle. And I know I have sometimes forgotten where it all began for me.

When I was in Japan in April, I purchased an old Konica II film camera that likely dates to about 1955. I recently ran a roll of Fujifilm 400 through it, and had it developed by Midwest Photo Exchange. I got the scans back today, and I’m amazed how often I got really sharp images with this camera. It’s nearly 70 years old. And I’m thrilled and fascinated by the variations in color.

When I look through these images I can see that for some of them I nailed the exposure and for others I was a bit off. But in general I think I did okay. Many of the ones that I took at night at the 4th of July festival are blurry. A tripod would’ve helped a lot but I didn’t take one with me. Still I got a few images that I really like.

Moving forward I’m going to get a notebook so that I can record the exposures I used. Because one thing this camera doesn’t have, is metadata. 😀🤷🏼‍♀️ I can only guess at what exposures I might have used at any given time.

But I am loving this new adventure. Even way back in my early film days I never shot any camera that was as old as this one or as completely manual. That it still works and turns out some spectacular photographs is amazing. 📸

📸 Shot in July, mostly in and around Granville on Fujifilm 400 speed color film and a Konica II film camera from Japan.
